Plenty of towns across Ohio have a story behind their name, and Amelia is no different. One of the early residents of the area was Charles Bowdoin, a tollkeeper on the Milton road. His wife, Amerlious – nicknamed Amelia – did much of the actual collection of the tolls, and when stagecoaches passed into town, they would often call her name. After the planned names of Milton and Milltown didn’t work, it soon gained the name of “Amelia”.
Sitting roughly a 30-minute drive from Cincinnati, Amelia today is home to over 4,800 residents. It’s close to the East Fork State Park, a popular park for camping and hiking. At the heart of the park is William H. Harsha Lake, a great place for boating and swimming. On top of that, it is one of the best fishing spots in the area, with folks driving from Dry Run, Mr. Carmel, Withamsville, and Cincinnati proper to try their luck at catching largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, and the numerous other species that make the lake their home.
